In 2011, Tangent Books published Household Worms by Stanley Donwood on the Nosuch Library imprint.
The book was launched at Waterstones in Notting Hill and for the event, Donwood plannned to produce a giant version of the pocket-size book from which renowned thespian Ric Jerome would read to the wonderment of the audience.
Producing a single copy of a giant book at a sensible price brings with it challenges, the first being how do you produce 148 giant pages on a fancy, uncoated paper stock. Donwood and Tangent publisher Richard Jones discovered a small shop on Gloucester Road in Bristol with a photocopier that would accept the thick uncoated paper and print it to scale from an A4 laser print of the pdf of the finished book.
Next, the giant pages would need to be guillotined to the correct size. Another shop on Gloucester Road had a large hand-operated guillotine and was able to oblige.
Next a bookbinder would be required to stab-bind the pages and insert them into a casebound cover. At this stage, time ran out and so we were left with a complete book of individual folios approximately 36mm high x 22mm wide. All signed by Stanley Donwood.
We sold a lot of the pages at the launch, but recently found the remnants.
These are unique. The single-page stories are all gone, so you will receive a complete story over two or three pages, mailed to you in a tube.
